Trend Analysis: Top 150 Stocks To Watch | May 9

The purpose of the trend analysis is to provide key information on the direction, strength and timing of change in the stock price trend in the short, medium and long term. This analysis covers the Top 150 Stocks on the United States stock exchange that are grouped in the BullDude’s Bundles.

Key Terms

Below you can find a brief explanation of the 2 key terms to help you understand how the direction and strength of the stock price trend is calculated using one of the most reliable tools: Moving Average.

Trend Direction

To understand if the stock price is in a positive or negative trend, the average price of the last 5 days (5-Day Moving Average) is compared with the average price of a number of key days based on the time period. The 20-Day Moving Average is used for the short-term trend, the 50-Day Moving Average for the medium-term trend and the 200-Day Moving Average for the long-term trend.

The stock price is in a positive trend if the 5-Day Moving Average is higher than the 3 moving averages just mentioned, while if it is lower it means that the trend is negative.

As you can see in the following image which shows the short term trend of Apple Inc (AAPL), Case 1 shows the presence of a NEGATIVE short term trend because the 5-Day Moving Average (red line) IS LOWER than the 20-Day Moving Average (black line). Case 2 instead shows the presence of a POSITIVE short term trend because the 5-Day Moving Average IS HIGHER than the 20-Day Moving Average. Therefore, in the presence of the horizontal red dotted line, the short-term trend changes from negative to positive because the 5-Day Moving Average changes from being below to above the 20-Day Moving Average.

Example – Trend Direction: Apple Inc (AAPL)

So, in this article you will know every day if the stock price trend of each of the Top 150 Stocks is positive or negative (in the short, medium and long term) and when there will be a change in the trend from negative to positive and vice versa. Also, you will know how strong the positive or negative trend is.

We see this in the next section.

Trend Strength

Having established whether the stock price is in a positive or negative trend, it is necessary to understand how strong the trend is. In the previous section we saw how to determine whether the trend is positive or negative based on whether the 5-Day Moving Average is higher or lower than the other 3 key moving averages (20-Day, 50-Day and 200-Day). To determine the strength of the trend, it is calculated how much the 5-Day Moving Average differs from the other 3 moving averages. The further the 5-Day Moving Average moves away, and therefore the percentage deviation is high, the stronger the trend.

Let’s see below an example always using the short-term trend of Apple Inc (AAPL) when it became positive, but for the negative trend the concept is identical.

Example – Trend Strength: Apple Inc (AAPL)

In Case 1 it is possible to identify a situation in which Apple’s positive short-term trend is WEAK because the 5-Day Moving Average is only 1.5% from the 20-Day Moving Average. Instead, in Case 2 the positive short-term trend of Apple is MUCH STRONGER, in fact the distance between the 5-Day Moving Average and the 20-Day Moving Average is 4.5%, therefore 3 times higher than in Case 1.

Data of the Top 150 Stocks

For each of the top 150 stocks included in the article, the direction and strength of the trend is shown for each of the 3 time periods considered: Short-Term, Mid-Term and Long-Term.

In the image below you will find an example of how trend direction and strength data are shown for each individual stocks. The percentage data indicates the strength of the trend, so the higher the value, the stronger the trend, while the color indicates whether the trend is positive (green) or negative (red). Furthermore, as an additional data, the price growth margin is shown to be able to return to the maximum price recorded in the last 52 weeks (“to 52-Wk High”). The data in the table are examples and not real.

Rankings

In addition to showing the strength and direction of the trend data for each of the 150 stocks covered by the article, rankings are also shown in order to intuitively identify the stocks with the strongest positive and negative trend.

In the image below an example of the stocks with the strongest positive and negative long-term trend, with an indication of how strong the trend is (therefore the percentage distance between the 5-Day Moving Average and the 200-Day Moving Average). The data in the table are examples and not real.

Summaries and Rankings

This article includes a lot of key data and information on each of the top 150 Stocks covered. Given the enormous amount of data and information, the following 2 sections have been introduced that allow you to access the data through summaries and rankings.

1. Trend Rankings

This first section shows which stocks have just changed the direction of the trend and intuitive rankings that allow you to find out which stocks have the strongest positive / negative trend for each of the 3 time periods considered (short, medium and long term).

Furthermore, a ranking is also shown for the so-called “All-Term” period, where only the stocks that have a positive (or negative) trend in both the short, medium and long term are included.

In summary, this section answers the following questions:

  • Which are the stocks with the Strongest Positive Trend?
  • Which are the stocks with the Strongest Negative Trend?
  • Which stocks have seen a Change in the Direction of the Trend?

2. Trend of the Top 150 Stocks

This second section shows, for each of the top 150 stocks, the direction and strength of the trend for each time period; short, medium and long term. The purpose of this section is to answer the following questions:

  • What is the direction and strength of the short, medium and long term trend of a company like Apple or Tesla or the other 148 top stocks?
  • How much does the company’s stock price have to rise to reach its 52-week high?

1. Trend Rankings

This section shows summaries and rankings that allow you to understand which stocks have reversed the trend and which show the strongest positive and negative trends. The data is provided for each of the 3 classic time periods considered (short, medium and long term) and for the “All-Term” period, which includes only the stocks that have the same trend direction for the short, medium and long term.

In summary, this section answers the following questions:

  • Which are the stocks with the Strongest Positive Trend?
  • Which are the stocks with the Strongest Negative Trend?
  • Which stocks have seen a Change in the Direction of the Trend?

Below you will find the 4 individual sections that contain the summaries and rankings for each of the 4 time periods previously mentioned; Short-Term, Mid-Term, Long-Term and All-Term Trend.

In order not to lose sight of the general picture, before being able to access the individual sections, we have inserted a summary section (1.1 Summary) which allows you to have a summary, in a single screen, of the basic information relating to the 4 time periods, knowing how many stocks are trending up and down and how many have reversed the trend during today’s trading session.

Subsequently it is possible to deepen every single section of interest (1.2 Individual Sections).

1.1 Summary

As previously explained, this is an introductory section that allows you to understand the general picture of the trends of the top 150 stocks for each of the 4 time periods considered. In particular, this section is composed of the following 3 subsections: General Summary, Top 3 by Trend Strength and Top 3 by New Trend.

In the following section 1.2 Individual Sections it is possible to deepen the data and rankings for each of the 4 time periods considered.

1.1.1 General Summary

This subsection shows, for each of the 4 time periods considered, the total number of stocks included in the analysis (Total Stocks), how many are in positive trend (Positive Stocks), in negative trend (Negative Stocks) and how many have inverted the trend from negative to positive and vice versa in today’s trading session (New Stocks).

*In the “ALL – Term Trend” section the sum of the “Positive Stocks” and “Negative Stocks” may not coincide with “Total Stocks” because stocks that do not have the same direction of the short, medium and long term trend are not included.

1.1.2 Top 3 by Trend Strength

This subsection shows, for each of the 4 time periods considered, the top 3 stocks that have the strongest positive trend (TOP 3) and the strongest negative trend (FLOP 3).

1.1.3 Top 3 by New Trend

This last subsection shows, for each of the 4 time periods considered, the top 3 stocks that in today’s trading session have reversed the trend from negative to positive (New Positive Trend) and from positive to negative (New Negative Trend).

*The blank box indicates that no stocks has reversed the trend in today’s trading session.

1.2 Individual Sections

Below you can choose to deepen the summary and the rankings for each of the 4 time periods considered: Short-Term, Mid-Term, Long-Term and All-Term.

2. Trend of the Top 150 Stocks

In this second section we find the data on the direction and strength of the short, medium and long term trend for each of the 150 top stocks that are covered by this analysis.

As additional information there is also the item “Distance to 52-Wk High”, useful for understanding how much the company’s price must increase to return to the maximum price reached in the last 52 weeks.

For each company included there is a percentage value that indicates the direction of the trend (positive trend if colored green or negative if colored red) and an indication of the strength of the trend (the higher the percentage, the stronger the trend).
