The dividend is an amount of money that the company decides to distribute to its shareholders. Usually the dividend is a part of the net profit produced by the company and is distributed every quarter.

Important Dividend Dates

Important dates to know regarding the dividend are as follows:

Announcement Date: the date on which the company announces that it will pay a dividend on a certain later date.
Ex-Dividend Date: The first day on which the right to receive the dividend expires. So if you don’t own the shares and buy them on the ex-Dividend date you will not be entitled to receive the dividend. To be eligible you must purchase them at least 1 day before the ex-dividend date. While if you own the shares to be eligible to receive it, just keep them until the close of the day before the ex-dividend. From the day of the ex-dividend you can sell them and still keep the right to receive it.
Payment Date: the day on which the company distributes the dividend to the shareholders who owned the shares the day before the expiry of the right to receive it (Ex-Dividend-Date).

If I don’t already own the shares, does it make sense to buy the day before the ex-dividend date in order to qualify for the dividend?

In theory, it makes no sense to adopt this strategy because if, for example, the company distributes a dividend of $ 1 per share, at the opening of the ex-dividend date the share price should open down by the same amount as the dividend distributed ($ 1). This in theory, in practice this is not exactly the case because the opening price is influenced by several factors besides the dividend and the investor could hold the shares for the following days (where he could recover the downward opening equal to the amount of the dividend).

Dividend per share (expressed in dollars) to be released by the company.

Annual Yield:
Percentage dividend yield calculated as the ratio of the annual dividend per share to the company’s current share price.
