This article provides a summary of what happened in the trading session that just ended and focuses on the 3 main United States equity indices: S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones Industrial.

These 3 indices are used because they fully represent the United States stock market.

The S&P 500 index is made up of the 500 largest companies listed on the US stock market and is highly diversified with companies present in 11 different sectors. The Nasdaq 100 Index includes the 100 largest non-financial companies in the US stock market and is heavily geared towards the technology sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Index comprises 30 of the largest publicly traded companies in the US stock market and was created before 1900.

1. Performance

This first section focuses on the performance at the end of today’s trading session of the 3 major US equity indices (S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 and Dow Jones Industrial). In addition, there is data on medium to long term performance.

In this subsection you will find today’s performance of the 3 main US equity indices and a chart showing the percentage of the components of each index that closed the day in positive (Advances) and negative (Declines).


Year-To-Date, 1-Month, 3-Months and 1-Year

In this subsection you will find the performance of the main stock indices in the last 1 month, 3 months, last year and Year-To-Date in graphical form and in percentage terms.


2. Top & Flop

In this second section you will find the top and flop companies of the 3 major indices based on the performance during the current trading session. In addition, there is the performance in today’s trading session of the 10 largest companies on the US exchange in terms of market capitalization.

3. S&P 500 Sectors

This third section shows the performance of today’s trading session of the 11 sectors that make up the S&P 500 index. The calculation of the performance of each sector is given by the average performance of each of the constituents of each sector.


4. S&P 500 Trend

This fourth section shows the percentage of the constituents of the S&P 500 that are currently in a positive (and negative) trend in the short, medium and long term.

A company is defined in a short term positive (negative) trend if its price is above (below) the average price of the last 20 days. We speak of a medium-term positive (negative) trend if the price is higher (lower) than the average price of the last 50 days. Finally, we talk about a long-term positive (negative) trend if the price is higher (lower) than the average price of the last 200 days.

Furthermore, in the graph it is possible to find the trend in the last few weeks of the percentage of components that are in a positive trend.


5. Next Earnings Reports

In this last section we will briefly see which companies release earnings reports tomorrow before the market opens and after the close.

Only companies that have a market value of at least $ 300 million are included
