This analysis has the function of Stock Screener because it allows you to identify the stocks that in the last trading session showed one of the trading signals / chart patterns that belong to the category of Moving Average Breakout and that identify the potential start of a positive trend in the short, medium and long term. The 4 trading signals / chart patterns considered in this article are the following:

  • Short-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 20-day Moving Average
  • Mid-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 50-day Moving Average
  • Mid / Long-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 100-day Moving Average
  • Long-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 200-day Moving Average

Furthermore, it has the function of Backtest because a test is carried out on historical data to understand how the same stocks have performed, every time the same trading signal / chart pattern has appeared in the past, after 20, 60 and 120 days and considering a strategy with stop loss and take profit.

The results of the backtest are shown in the form of rankings based on the strategies that have had the best results in terms of positive trades, average return per trade and total return, i.e. simulating an initial invested capital each time the trading signal / chart pattern has appeared in the past.

1. Stock Screener

This section aims to identify the stocks that in the last trading session showed one of the following 4 trading signals / chart patterns that identify the potential start of a positive trend in the short, medium and long term:

  • Short-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 20-day Moving Average
  • Mid-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 50-day Moving Average
  • Mid / Long-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 100-day Moving Average
  • Long-Term trend:
    Price crossed above 200-day Moving Average

The following image indicates with “Stocks Analyzed” the number of stocks, with a market value of at least 1 billion dollars, that in the last trading session showed the 4 trading signals / chart patterns. The list with the names of the individual stocks is shown only in the pdf report and not below for a matter of space.

2. Backtest

The backtest is a test carried out using historical data with the aim of understanding how a strategy would have performed in the past based on certain criteria. In this case, the backtest is applied to the stocks identified by the stock screener and therefore that in the last trading session showed one of the 4 trading signals / chart patterns previously mentioned.

The main purpose of the backtest is to understand how these stocks have performed in the period after the same trading signal / chart pattern appeared in the past.

How It Works?

Since the goal of the backtest is to understand how stocks have performed in the past after the same trading signal / chart pattern appeared, let’s proceed in the following 3 steps:

STEP 1:
Identify the days of the last 4 years in which the same trading signal / chart pattern appeared
STEP 2:
In each of those days, the opening of a buy position on the company is simulated
STEP 3:
The closing of each of the buying positions is simulated in the following 4 ways:

  • After 20-days
  • After 60-days
  • After 120-days
  • Using a stop loss of -10% and take profit of +20%

Proceeding in this way it is possible to know how many times the trading signal / chart pattern has appeared in the past, how much the price of the company has increased / decreased in the following 20, 60, 120 days and using a strategy with a stop loss and a take profit.

Therefore, for each company analyzed, 4 different position closing strategies are analyzed and therefore each of these will generate key metrics that are explained in the next subsection.

The advantage of having 4 different results allows you to understand for each stocks when it is more likely to perform better, for example a company could perform poorly after the first 20 days but then statistically after 60 days it is always positive.

Stop Loss and Take Profit: In this report, the stop loss and take profit refer to the end-of-day data. So, if in a simulated trade there is a stop loss of -10% and in the middle of the day it was hitting -12% but it eventually recovers and closes the day at -8%, then the stop loss will not trigger and the trade will not be closed.

NO Overlapping trades: This concept is very important and refers to the fact that there cannot be simultaneous trades for the same strategy.

For example, if the apple price rises above the 20-day average on January 10, the opening of a buy position is simulated. Now let’s assume that the trade’s closing strategy is 20 days after the opening, so January 30th. Now, if Apple’s price goes below the 20-day average on January 13 and then goes back up again on January 15, a second purchase position on Apple will not be opened, but the original one will remain. Different speech if the apple price returns above the 20-day average on February 3, then in that case the opening of a new trades will be simulated.

The fact that each closing strategy has a different time before closing the trade means that the number of trades, with the same entry strategy, will be different for the 4 different types of exit strategies. Quite simply it is enough to take the example above, if the exit strategy had been after 60 days instead of after 20, then the fact that the price of apple had returned above the average at 20 days on February 15 would have meant that the buy position was not opened because 60 days must pass from the day of purchase to have a second trades.

Obviously these concepts do not apply to the strategy with take profit and stop loss because the opening and closing in that case depend on the achievement of a certain gain or loss and not based on time.

Key Metrics

This subsection explains the 6 key metrics that represent the result of the backtest of all the analyzed strategies.

The image below shows an example of how the backtest results are shown for each stocks analyzed assuming that the stock screener shows that Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA) and Amazon (AMZN) are the only 3 stocks that in the last trading session saw their price crossed above the 20-day moving average and it is assumed that the backtest places as a condition for closing the trade that 20 days have elapsed since the opening.

The data in the table is not real but just an example.

Example: Key metrics

ENTRY Strategy: represents the trading signal / chart pattern used to simulate the opening of the buy position. In this example, the ENTRY strategy is represented by Apple’s price crossed above the 20-day moving average.

EXIT Strategy: represents the closing condition of each trade and as we have seen previously it can be of 4 types: after 20, 60, 120 days or using a stop loss of -10% and a take profit of +20%. In the example it is used as the EXIT Strategy 20 days after the trade was opened.

No .: represents the number of times the trading signal / chart pattern has appeared in the last 4 years. In the example, over the past 4 years, Apple’s price has risen above the 20-day moving average 25 times and therefore the opening of 25 buy positions (also called trades) is simulated.

Positive Trades: represents the percentage of trades that, after 20 days from the opening of the position, closed positively, i.e. that the price after 20 days is higher than the opening price of the position. In the example, Apple’s price 85% of the time, 20 days after it rose above the 20-day moving average, was above the entry price.

Average Return: represents the average performance of each trades made. In the example, Apple gained 4% on average 20 days after the price broke the 20-day moving average.

Total Return: Simulates the return of a $ 10,000 portfolio that invests 100% of the capital in each trades, gross of commissions. In the example, if you had an initial $ 10,000 portfolio and invested 100% of the remaining capital after each trades every time Apple crossed above the 20-day moving average, you would have earned 266.6%.

So … Apple’s price over the past 4 years has risen above the 20-day moving average 25 times and 85% of the time after 20 days the price was on average 4% higher than the day it was verified the trading signal / chart pattern. Finally, if you had invested an initial capital of $ 10,000 each time Apple’s price rose above the 20-day moving average, you would have earned 266.6%.
